Deals
Track and progress individual sales opportunities from first contact to close.
Deals
Deals (also called Opportunities) are where individual sales pursuits are tracked, priced, and moved toward a decision — separate from the account or contact relationship itself.
Navigation
Open CRM > Deals from the main sidebar, or go to /deals. Deals are also reachable from an account's own Deals tab, and can be created directly while converting a lead.
What a Deal Contains
A deal can include:
- Account and primary contact.
- Owner.
- Estimated amount and currency.
- Probability and forecast category.
- Expected close date, and — once closed — the actual close date and, if lost, a reason.
- Line items.
- Quotes.
- Contacts (the buying committee).
- Sales activities (calls, emails, meetings, tasks, and notes) and a separate change-history log.
Deal Fields
For exact required fields, accepted values, and relationships, see Deals and Quotes Field Reference.
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Deal name | The name of the sales pursuit. |
| Account | The customer this deal is for. |
| Primary contact | The main contact for this deal. |
| Owner | The salesperson responsible for the deal. Defaults to whoever creates the deal if left unset. |
| Amount | Estimated or quoted deal value. |
| Probability | Estimated likelihood of winning, as a percent. |
| Forecast category | How this deal should be counted in forecasting. |
| Expected close date | When the deal is expected to close. |
| Actual close date | Set automatically to today when the deal is marked Won or Lost. |
| Lost reason | Given when the deal is marked Lost. Shown next to the status badge afterward. Optional — defaults to "Unspecified" if left blank. |
The actual close date and lost reason aren't offered on the deal's edit form — use the status control below to set them instead. Both can still be corrected afterward from the Deals list, where every field, including these two, is editable inline.
Deal Status
A deal does not move through named pipeline stages. Instead, it has an explicit, deliberately-set status:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Open | Still in progress. The default for every new deal. |
| Won | Marked Won from the status control. |
| Lost | Marked Lost from the status control, with a reason. |
Status only changes when someone deliberately marks the deal Won, Lost, or reopens it from the status control — never as a side effect of editing another field.
Common Workflows
Create a Deal
Three ways to start a deal:
- From the Deals list — open Deals, create a new deal, select the account and, optionally, a primary contact, then set the deal name, amount, currency, probability, forecast category, owner, and expected close date.
- From an account — open the account, go to its Deals tab, and create a deal already scoped to that account.
- From a lead — converting a lead offers an "Also open a Deal" toggle, which creates a deal linked back to the original lead.
Once created, add line items on the deal's Line Items tab to describe what's being sold.
Quote a Deal
There are two ways to create a quote, depending on how much of the deal you want to price:
- Quote everything — open the deal, go to the Quotes tab, and create a quote. It pulls in all of the deal's line items automatically.
- Quote only some line items — open the deal's Line Items tab, select the items to quote, and create a quote from the selection. The deal's original line items are untouched; the quote gets its own independent copies.
The Quotes tab offers both a list view and a Kanban board (grouped by quote status, drag-and-drop to change status), and one quote per deal can be marked Primary. Continue in Quotes.
Close a Deal
- Open the deal.
- Click the status badge next to the deal name.
- Choose Mark Won, or Mark Lost — a reason is optional and defaults to "Unspecified" if left blank.
- To undo, choose Reopen from the same menu.
The actual close date is set automatically to today.
